The West Monroe Police Department recently received a grant through the Louisiana Highway Safety Program to enforce Impaired Driving and Occupant Protection Laws.  The $130,000 grant will provide overtime funding for checkpoints and roving patrols with the goal of reducing the number of impaired driving crashes and serious bodily injuries and fatalities because of not using or improper use of occupant protection devices.
In addition, the Police Department has begun a Traffic Safety Program that provides overtime funding to focus on aggressive and distracted driving. Last year, the Police Department investigated 1,091 crashes.
Violations that will be focused on include speeding, stop signs, road rage, careless operation and other traffic offense that occur while a driver is distracted while texting while driving.
The Police Department reminds drivers to be safe, especially during the holidays due to increased traffic and encourages the public to report aggressive driving or if a driver is suspected of impairment.
